From my own youth, I know how important sports can be for one’s own development. During the phases in which I was able to practice sports on a regular basis, I did not even think of doing anything less meaningful or even destructive. Things were very different for me in the stages of my youth when I did not engage in regular sports activities. A permanent tingling tempted me to let my energy run free and my hormone bombarded and underdeveloped mind managed at that time not yet to direct the energy into positive paths. No question: Sport is important, especially at a young age.
In addition to physical fitness, sport also promotes team spirit, cooperation and responsibility. Of course, this fact is not unknown to Tshega, which is why there is a wide range of sports at the school offered. Since the beginning of this year, the sports department has even been given a higher weighting. Responsible for this is the new headmaster “Diederik”, who has been in charge of the Lighthouse Academy for almost a year now and is relieving Ellanie of this immensely. In addition to cross country, foot- and netball, the Lighthouse Academy now also promotes athletics and hockey. It is really great to see what great sports talents rural South Africa has and at the same time it is deeply sad to see that unfortunately they are hardly promoted.
In any case, the Lighthouse Academy can now also have several exceptional talents. Already on my last visit, four years ago, I mentioned a student who has become in her age group South African champion (!!!) in Cross Country. This year, the school also brought out an incredibly strong shot putter, which has qualified over small and big contests to the South Africa Championship. “Mooren” is the name of this girl and she is even planning to improve in next year. Anyone who achieves good sporting achievements beyond the primary school can finally hope for scholarships and ultimately has the opportunity to see much of the big, wide world. And that even sponsored. I keep my fingers crossed for all athletes at the Lighthouse Academy. My most positive thoughts are with you!
This year, new to the program is hockey. Yeah, that’s what’s like ice hockey, just completely without ice. 😉 Sir Diederick has already identified some talents in the school and is now building up this department slowly. Since you obviously also need the complete protective equipment for official competitions, otherwise you can not start, we decide to become active here as well. The donations given by my friends are also being used to supplement the school’s meager equipment arsenal. Twelve combos for field players consisting of racket, ball, shin – and mouth guard are purchased on site and two – much more extensive – equipment-packs are also ordered for the goalkeepers. Through this shopping, the sports department receives a donation of 8938, – Rand (= about € 550, -). In any case, the two school teams are equipped in order to let the girls – and boys team play at the same time. All the athletes of the two teams of course like to join a photo shoot with me and the new equipment and show us their most dangerous fighter face.
May it rain goals, cups and medals for the Lighthouse Academy.
