One of my biggest wishes this time is a visit to Vutomi’s family on their private property. Since the family lives pretty close to the Lighthouse Academy, this venture is quickly planned and realised. At the family’s house, we gather in the shade of a mango tree and chat about the current situation of the family. I’ve known Vutomi and her mom Aggie, who works for Basadi, for four years now. But today I also get to know Vutomi’s bigger brother and Vutomi’s bigger sister, the eldest of the three children. For a year now, the house has also become a bit more lively, as Vutomi’s sister has given birth to a lovely boy. I am accompanied on my visit by lovely Milly, who warns me that the little one will probably be a bit suspicious towards me because he had no contact with white people yet. The reality looks a bit different then. “Matlatse” is incredibly curious and in fact, as a stranger, I get most of his attention. I enjoy the great feeling of being warmly welcomed, not just by the young Matlatse, but by the entire family. A downer is the fact that Freddy, Vutomi’s dad, to whom I have had electronic contact since my last visit, can’t be present. Unfortunately Freddy has to work far away during my whole stay.
As I distribute my gifts to the Nkuna family, I start to talk about another issue: I would like to help Vutomi financialy to get more math lessons. And even though I’ve seen that she’s definitely above average in her class, I still see potential for improvement in some calculation methods. It strikes me that she learns incredibly fast, if you explain it to her individually. The mother agrees immediately and also Vutomi is happy because she enjoys school and likes to learn. Her joy grows even more when I tell her that “Sir Cosmo Gomo” will lead the class. She already knows this wonderful teacher from the natural sciences. Cosmo is an incredibly patient and entertaining teacher who has definitely found his true calling here. And so every Saturday for a small amount of money he offers more lessons for different grades. Cosmo is looking forward to Vutomi, Vutomi is looking forward to Cosmo and Aggy and I’m happy that Vutomi will learn even better now. And I guess that you are happy, too. Of course, I’m also happy about that 😉
